Welcome to Goderich, the "prettiest town in Canada". Located on the west coast of Ontario on the shores of Lake Huron, Goderich has some of the best sunsets in North America. Goderich is a summer paradise with three beaches where you can watch the sailboats glide by and relax with a family picnic before taking a stroll along the boardwalk. And although the mood is relaxed, it's hard to be bored in Goderich. The town has many activities for both residents and vacationers, such as swimming, boating, fishing, waterskiing, cycling, hiking and golfing. The recreation complex with an ice rink, swimming pool and fitness centre is the perfect one-stop fitness destination for the active family. Goderich is busy with festivals and events throughout the year. The Goderich Farmer's Market runs each Saturday from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving at the South side of Courthouse Park. The market offers a great selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables, honey, maple syrup, homemade baked goods, meats and crafts. An open-air flea market operates every Sunday from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving selling antiques, crafts and much more. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy a concert every Sunday in July and August in the Lion's Harbour Park or take in the West Coast Bluesfest in September. The Christmas spirit lights up the town with the Festival of Lights from November to January. One of the most memorable aspects of the town is its unique octagonal shopping district, known "The Square". With its coffee shops, movie theatre, retail stores, and Courthouse Park, The Square is the centre of the action. As a port, Goderich is rich in history. A small marine museum, located in the wheel house of the SS Shelter Bay, showcases the dedicated people who made their living on Lake Huron, while the Huron County Museum depicts the early settlement and development of the area. The Huron Historic Gaol is a recognized National History Site. The octagonal-shaped building was home to the Huron County Jail from 1842 until 1972. Goderich offers many amenities for residents such as a hospital and a medical centre, a public library and both Catholic and public elementary and secondary schools. There are many active service groups including the Lions Club, Kinsmen and Rotary Club and sports are popular with both children and adults. Arts and cultural activities are also a big part of life in Goderich, from theatre groups and art galleries to Celtic celebrations. With its mix of new subdivisions and classic Georgian architecture, Goderich is ideal for both young couples looking for a place to raise a family and retirees who simply want to enjoy the sunset with a cool drink and a deck chair.
