The village of Bayfield is the ideal combination of quaint shopping and natural beauty. Located on the Eastern shore of Lake Huron at the mouth of the Bayfield River in Huron County, Bayfield was named after Great Lakes surveyor and British naval officer Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield. Bayfield is a village rich in history. The Bayfield Town Hall was built in 1882 and moved to its present location on Clan Gregor Square in 1920. The hall was shut down in 1984 because it no longer met fire code regulations but opened again after local fundraising efforts provided the money needed to save the building. Today the hall is a popular site for concerts, meetings and weddings and is home to the local film society. A popular attraction in Bayfield is the Folmar Windmill, a fully-operational replica of 'The Arend' windmill in the Netherlands. The Folmar Windmill is an excellent example of traditional Dutch architecture and is a functioning gristmill and sawmill. Bayfield has a thriving agricultural economy with many farms offering 'field to table' fare such as home grown produce, natural baked goods and fresh meats, which are perfect for anyone interested in eating locally. Hikers will appreciate the numerous scenic trails along the Bayfield River and boaters will enjoy waterskiing, swimming and fishing on Lake Huron. May to September is busy with an active tourist trade of boaters, beach visitors and golfers, while November brings people from across the province to the popular Christmas in Bayfield shopping event. The summer kicks off with a Sail and Canvas Festival in June, continues with a lengthy writers' festival and wraps up with an antiques show and sale and the Bayfield Fair in August. With nearly 50 stores, galleries, restaurants and services, Bayfield is perfect for both tourists and residents alike. Housing in Bayfield is a comfortable mix of bungalows, custom-built homes and retirement living. Whether you're looking to raise your young family close to nature or you're ready for an adult living lifestyle, Bayfield offers something for everyone.
